About This Documentation
What Is Life Like Inside a Cage?
This website documents the reality of cage egg farming in Japan through a daily record of life inside a commercial egg farm.
All of the photographs, videos, and written records published here were documented inside the same egg farm.
The housing conditions shown on this website reflect the conventional cage systems that are still widely used today.
Rather than focusing only on exceptional incidents or the worst moments, this website records the ordinary reality of daily life inside the cages. Events are presented one day at a time, in chronological order. Each video and accompanying description documents only what was observed on that particular day.
Although this is the record of a single farm, it reflects many of the welfare problems commonly found in cage egg production.
What This Documentation Shows
The purpose of this website is simple.
By understanding the reality of cage egg farming, both consumers and companies can choose cage-free eggs.
We hope these records provide the information needed to make that choice.

What do hens experience inside cage systems?
The scenes shown below are not rare or exceptional—they represent conditions that occur routinely in cage egg production.
Pecked and Featherless
Weaker hens are often pecked by other birds until much of their feathers are torn away. Inside a cage, there is nowhere to escape. Losing their feathers causes severe stress for the hens.
Trapped in the Cage
Some hens become trapped in gaps around the egg collection area, leaving them unable to move.
Unable to reach food or water, some die where they are trapped.
Severely Injured Foot
This hen has lost almost all of one foot.
The injury appears to have been repeatedly pecked by other hens.
No veterinary treatment is provided.
