Following the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics 2020, public comments were called for upon the draft of the Sustainable Sourcing Code on procurement for sustainable food. In the draft, the standard of animal welfare was stated as follows: (4) Livestock products produced by taking appropriate measures to raise livestock animals in a comfortable environment with reference to the Animal Welfare-oriented Livestock Management Standards. The draft also referred to JGAP or Global G.A.P as acceptable certifications. Those who are not certified by JGAP or Global G.A.P may also consider the GAP Acquisition Challenge System, which is a prior step before acquiring a JGAP certificate. Please sign & share this petition! https://www.change.org/p/the-egg-industry-please-do-not-lock-down-laying-hens To prioritize maximum output while minimizing costs, most chickens in Japan are raised on factory farms where they suffer greatly, leading short, miserable lives in overcrowded cages. However, many people stopped to see our poster, and asked for more documents, so we thought many are, in fact, interested in animal welfare issues. Most visitors were associated with animal husbandry research universities, national research institutions, and also students of animal husbandry colleges. We ask those who are, or wish to pursue professions in such fields, to research and…
The multi-partisan parliamentary group aiming for zero killing of dogs and cats has established a project team for amending the Animal Welfare Act. Since its launch on August 25, 2023, the PT has held 21 meetings to hear from stakeholders and deliberate on the direction of amendments. Out of these 21 sessions, however, only one touched on livestock animals, and just one on laboratory animals. Despite 1 billion livestock animals being killed annually, the issue remains far from the priorities of lawmakers. In the sole PT meeting addressing livestock, the discussions showed promise, but it is unlikely to expect significant amendments by 2025 at this rate. 17th PT: Hearings on…
