With their legs fixed, chickens are hung upside down before having their heads cut a little with a knife. While bleeding they are kept hanging for a few minutes, then they are put into boiling water headfirst.

What if it happened to dogs? Cats? Or humans?

However, people who stock, process, sell and eat chickens accept the cruelty.
They go about their daily lives blocking out the cruelty on their doorstep as they believe it happens elsewhere. Since 2018, Animal Rights Center has been pointing out that chickens have their heads cut off while still conscious, sometimes this action is unsuccessful and the chickens head remains which means they are boiled alive.
Some politicians raised this issue at, for example, the House of Representatives. However, the national statical result of the fiscal year 2019 showed that the situation surrounding this issue did not improve at all.

The number of chickens that boiled alive in the fiscal year 2017 was 474,665.

The number of chickens that boiled alive in the fiscal year 2018 was 508,406.

The number of chickens that boiled alive in the fiscal year 2019 was 512,965.

The percentage, 0.063%, was the same as that of the previous year, which means there was no improvement.

Although such a cruel act should not be performed on even only one chicken, the number was increasing year and year, and in the fiscal year 2019, it resulted in an increase of 4,559 chickens killed savagely.

The breakdown of the number in the fiscal year 2019 showed that 198,707 of the chickens were for egg-laying, whereas 314,258 of them were for meat. This clearly indicates that the success rate of slaughter was lower for egg-laying chickens, and they were treated much more carelessly.

Although OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) rarely ban something strictly (Even when they want to do that, they cannot), they prohibit boiling conscious chickens with their “Terrestrial Animal Health Code”, chapter 7.5 says “Every effort shall be made to ensure that no conscious or live birds enter the scalding tank.” This shows that such a way to slaughter chickens is not tolerated globally.
