Cafe Fuwa-Fuwa, a pancake specialty cafe in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture, has made a cage-free commitment after informing us that all eggs used in the cafe are cage-free eggs in response to an inquiry from the Animal Rights Center Japan.A cage-free commitment is a promise to consumers to switch their eggs to cage-free eggs (barn-laid or free-range), or, for companies already using cage-free eggs, the promise to continue not using caged-eggs.The owner of Café Fuwa-fuwa became interested in organic and livestock production processes because of his own atopic disease. As he researched, he was shocked by the slaughtering methods of livestock animals and began to question the harsh methods of animal husbandry.The owner, who stresses the importance of looking at the distribution process of meat, eggs and milk until they reach the consumer, chooses cage-free eggs from Matsumoto City for the eggs used in his restaurant. And they serve pancakes made with plant-based milk, without using any cow milk.To promote cage-free, they will also use the Animal Rights Center Japan’s cage-free logo in their cafe.Cage-free commitment, to 200 companies in Japan!With Cafe Fuwa-Fuwa’s cage-free commitment, the number of companies that have pledged to be cage-free in Japan has now reached 200.Over the past few years, the issue of animal welfare and cage-raising has become more widely discussed in the media and in Congress, and consumers are becoming more aware of the cruelty of caged eggs.
