Chicken meat for chicken is shipped in 2kg in Europe and the United States, but do you know that it is shipped after thickening to about 3 kg in Japan? Originally, chicken is an animal that grows over 150 days, but broiler has been modified to grow larger in 50 days. They suffer from doing rapid growth.Broilers do not walk naturally. They walk a bit and then sit down. The chickens who lost their natural appearance spend a lot of time in pain, packed in a container after 50 days, being hung upside down, they are neck cut and killed. See detail about broiler (in Japanese) The density in japan…
Bones of burned birds – picture taken at a battery cage in Japan 2016 It was revealed that birds were burned alive at a chicken farm with 7 million birds that used battery cages. In April of 2016, Animal Rights Center reported that birds were burned alive at several chicken farms. Some farms have facilities called “dead bird incinerators,” which can burn 50 to 60 birds a day. In those places, they usually burn dead birds found in cages, but they sometimes kill deformed birds with bend necks, broken legs, as well as birds who are unable to produce eggs very much. In such cases, it was understood that these…
Koharu was rescued from a battery cage in Japan by Animal Rights Center Japan. 95.2% of the egg farms in Japan are using battery cages. Koharu was in a battery cage of a windowless egg farm. She was blind when she was rescued. But her eyes opened in few days. She started dust-bathing in a few weeks. Now she was adopted by a new family and she got new mother(human), new sisters and brothers (2 chickens, some cats, and one dog). She seems to love them so much, especially her mother and the dog. Please support ARCJ help Koharu’s friends. http://www.arcj.org/en/donate/
SKYLARK, the Japanese nationwide family restaurant chain, which includes Gusto and Jonathan, is continuing to sell foie gras. So far, it has bought over 30 tons of foie gras directly from producers ― that’s over fifty thousand birds. Foie gras is produced through gavage, the forced administration of food. Everyday, for two to three weeks, ducks and geese are force-fed between one- fourth and one-third of their body weight, by means of a long feeding tube that is forced down directly into their stomachs, so they can’t vomit. It is written that SKYLARK’s foie gras has IGP Certification. However IGP Certification is a production area certification – It tells us…
Please sign & share this petition! https://www.change.org/p/the-egg-industry-please-do-not-lock-down-laying-hens To prioritize maximum output while minimizing costs, most chickens in Japan are raised on factory farms where they suffer greatly, leading short, miserable lives in overcrowded cages. Considered as “things”, not living beings, no consideration is given to their well-being, or the fact that they have their own lives, feelings and emotions. The low price of eggs has remained constant since the1960’s, while chickens have paid the price in suffering. This must end. This petition will be delivered to the egg industry, egg retailers, food manufacturers and restaurants using battery cage eggs and will also be used to lobby the government. The use…

Today we held a demonstration in front of the Skylark general stockholder’s meeting. During the general meeting, one of the Skylark stockholders suggested that Skylark sell a replacement version of fois gras like faux gras instead. He told us that one of the director’s of Skylark had said that fois gras is popular with Japanese customers because it is is unusual, but that he understood there were issues and problems related to the selling of fois gras. We need to undertake a more powerful campaign to convince Skylark to take fois gras off the menu.
Japanese government announced the trade statistics of 2015. The import of the foie gras in 2015 decreased 37,041 kg (20%) from 2014.It is one of the factors that Japan was not able to import foie gras by the bird flu in France from France in December. However, there is much import until November in Japan because Japanese use foie gras in whole year unlike foreign countries. It becomes the large decrease even if comparing the import until November. Recognition that foie gras is cruel spreads out among Japanese, and demand may decreases.37,041 kg of foie gras mean 61,735 duck and geese. *We save 61735 duck and goose by Animal Rights Center’s campaigns. Still 234,010 ducks…
We met Sakura at a slaughterhouse in the winter of 2016. She was loaded onto a truck, bloody, with her intestines protruding from her body. She endured most of her life in a gestation crate, small crates designed for pregnant farm pigs that do not allow for movement. She was unable to even turn around or interact with other pigs. She was raised just to bear and deliver piglets. The day that she was finally allowed to leave the crate was the day that she was brought to the slaughterhouse. She could no longer be used as a breeding machine so there was no need to keep her alive. She…

In Japan, there are no regulations regarding animal welfare before and during slaughter. As a result, many animals are not provided with enough water to be comfortable, and after suffering from excruciating thirst, they are slaughtered. The conditions of hens are especially miserable. Seven to ten hens are packed into small containers and without access to water, they are transported long distances on trucks. They stay in the containers until they are killed. Some poultry famers stop giving their hens water a half day before departure. As a consequence, those hens suffer for extremely long times. Most poultry farmers who raise broilers (chickens raised for meat) want to keep time…
Please sign petition End cruel treatment of animals at slaughterhouses in japan https://goo.gl/ky5o7D This video was filmed in 2015,Japan Please share this problem people around you. ● Carried in trucks, terrified cows are kicked from the truck, their tails are twisted or even crushed to force them to move. ● In order to make pigs move, stun-gun are used excessively. ● Pigs suffering from disease are left for an extended amount of time, then hung by the leg and dragged away. ● Animals that are carried to the slaughter house in the afternoon are not fed and are butchered the next day. They are not even given water. (They are seen drinking dirty water from the ground while they are being washed) Cruelty and inhumane actions towards animals at slaughter houses is not the responsibility of individuals. It is an issue of the system. We request the government to make an effort in stopping animal cruelty. At the least individuals and slaughter house should be made aware of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health code. *This photo is this taken in 2015 Japan. These are pigs in a holding pen waiting to be killed in the adjacent slaughterhouse. Points on slaughterhouses extracted from the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health code. ● “…mammals and ratites which are not taken directly upon arrival to the place of slaughter should have drinking water available to them from appropriate facilities at all times.” ● “Animals which have not been slaughtered within 12 hours of their arrival should be fed, and should subsequently be given moderate amounts of food at appropriate intervals.” ● “Under no circumstances should animal handlers resort to violent acts to move animals, such as crushing or breaking tails of animals, grasping their eyes or pulling them by the ears.” ● “The throwing or dropping of animals, or their lifting or dragging by body parts such as their tail, head, horns, ears, limbs, wool, hair or feathers, should not be permitted.” ● “Electric goads and prods should only be used in extreme cases and not on a routine basis to move animals. The use and the power output should be restricted to that necessary to assist movement of an animal and only when an animal has a clear path ahead to move. Goads and other aids should not be used repeatedly if the animal fails to respond or move. In such cases it should be investigated whether some physical or other impediment is preventing the animal from moving.” ● “Painful procedures (including whipping, kicking, tail twisting, use of nose twitches, pressure on eyes, ears or external genitalia), or the use of goads or other aids which cause pain and suffering (including large sticks, sticks with sharp ends, lengths of metal piping, fencing wire or heavy leather belts), should not be used to move animals.” ● “Injured or sick animals, requiring immediate slaughter, should be killed humanely and without delay” OIE Code for slaughterhouses http://www.oie.int/animal-welfare/animal-welfare-key-themes/
In February, 2014, the Danish Agriculture Minister, Dan Jorgensen, made the following comment about banning slaughtering without stunning, “Animal rights come before religion.” Workers following certain religious customs, for example, those connected to Islamic Halal and Jewish Kashrut practices, slaughter animals without first stunning them. The cutting of the carotid arteries causes extreme pain to animals that have not been stunned. Some people in Japan are slaughtering animals according to Islamic halal traditions. This practice might start in Hokkaido. During the prefectural assembly held on September 16, in the reply to the question given from Atuko Okoshi (a member of the Liberal Democratic Party of Hokkaido Prefectual Assembly), the governor…
In Japan, binding regulations for animal welfare related to slaughter do not exist. Many animals in slaughterhouses are under extreme thirst. The conditions of pigs and cows in Japanese slaughterhouses (2011 Investigation conducted by Meat Hygiene Inspection Center) http://nichiju.lin.gr.jp/test/html/mag/06612/d1.pdf According to the research above, 50.4% of cows and 86.4% of pigs in slaughterhouses have no water to drink. (Only 7% of slaughterhouses kill all animals on the same day they are brought in.) No official investigations have been conducted to research conditions of chickens in slaughterhouses. However, none of the poultry processing plants we have privately visited provide food or water to chickens. We suspect no processing plants in Japan supply…
The Survey on Attitude toward foie gras – Changes in import volume of foie gras 63.3% of people who know the production method of foie gras show a feeling of refusal in eating foie gras. 【Title of survey】Survey on farm animals 【Responsible organization】Non-Profit Organization Animal Rights Center *requested for survey to the private research company 【Period】2014/12/17~2014/12/19 【The number of valid responses】1,188 【Objective】In order to understand the consumer awareness and behavior concerning farm animals 【Survey design】Style: Internet survey 【Target area】all parts of Japan 【Target】men and women between 15 and 59 years of age * junior high school students or younger are excluded * No image used *ISO20252 *ratio of male to female: male 50.8%, female 49.2% *Only one choice of the answers for each question 1. Please answer the questions after reading below sentence. Foie gras which is known as one of the three major delicacies of the world is made by force-feeding ducks and geese. For two to three weeks, two to three times a day, a worker grabs each bird, shoves a long, thick metal tube all the way down his throat, and an air pump shoots up to over amount of mush corn into his esophagus, and making thier livers 10 times bigger. This force-feeding is receiving a great deal of criticism and many countries prohibiting it. 1-1. Before reading above sentence, I knew how foie gras is produced. 1-2. I would like to eat foie gras after having known the fact of production methods. 1-3. I think companies and restaurants should stop serving foie gras which were made by force-feeding ducks and geese. 1-4. Foie gras should not be served at the celebrations such as wedding. 1-5. I feel sorry for the birds who will be foie gras. Among the people who did not know the production of foie gras method, 74.1% of people “do not want to eat foie gras” ,show a feeling of refusal for the foie gras. ※Among the people who replied “Not Applicable” for a question of 1-1, the person who replied “Not Applicable” question of 1-2 is 51.5%. the person who replied it when “Less Applicable” is 22.6%. In addition, as a result of this investigation, I understood that 59.6% of people showed a feeling of refusal to foie gras among “the people who ate meat every day”. ※In this investigation, we survey various investigations about farm animal’s and lifestyle. 2. I would like to know the production methods of farm animals (meat, eggs, and milk etc) when I choose to purchase. 69.4% of people are interested in the breeding environment of livestock products. However, it is provided practically by the consumers who do not know the breeding method of cruel foie gras. Changes in import volume of foie gras The import volume of foie gras has been decreasing since 2006 when ARC has started enlightening actives.
Egg laying hens are confined to cages know as “battery cages”. The average space allowed each hen in a battery cage (in Japan) is 22cm x22cm. (About the same size or smaller than a hen’s body.) Several hens are often put into the same cage, where they commonly become injured, and even die due to overcrowding. The cages are placed at an angle of 8 degrees, so that any eggs laid, roll forwards for easy collection. In these cages, the hens are forced to stand on bare wire, which cuts into their feet, and causes terrible injuries. Their nails continue to grow inwards into their feet, causing pain and distress.…
The multi-partisan parliamentary group aiming for zero killing of dogs and cats has established a project team for amending the Animal Welfare Act. Since its launch on August 25, 2023, the PT has held 21 meetings to hear from stakeholders and deliberate on the direction of amendments. Out of these 21 sessions, however, only one touched on livestock animals, and just one on laboratory animals. Despite 1 billion livestock animals being killed annually, the issue remains far from the priorities of lawmakers. In the sole PT meeting addressing livestock, the discussions showed promise, but it is unlikely to expect significant amendments by 2025 at this rate. 17th PT: Hearings on…
