Since 2016, Animal Rights Center Japan has been conducting a survey once a year using a private company to see how well the actual rearing of livestock animals is recognized by consumers. We report the results of the survey conducted in 2021 (the number of valid replies was 1,207). On 2020/11/5, avian flu broke out at a poultry farm in Kagawa Prefecture for the first time this winter. Since then, bird flu has spread to Fukuoka, Hyogo, Miyazaki, Nara, Hiroshima, Oita, Wakayama, Okayama, Shiga, Kochi, Tokushima, Chiba, Gifu, Kagoshima, Toyama, and Ibaraki, and the number of killing is currently (2021/3/10) 9,689,703 birds. When visiting cattle housed in Tohoku following the disaster we witnessed cows laying down in abandoned cattle houses. When water was offered they guzzled it down. One cow, who had been unable to stand up, passed away a few days later. The calves, only 3 to 4 months old, in the neighboring cattle house were all dead. The baby cows were also dead in crates except for one calf who managed to escape. They died alone. The heifers were mostly dead. We’ve been following the issue of egg laying hens being abandoned for long hours at slaughterhouses since 2018.Unlike broiler chickens, egg laying hens have to wait overnight until they are killed at slaughterhouses. It’s a big animal welfare issue since chickens are not able to move their heads in a tiny cage for these hours. The multi-partisan parliamentary group aiming for zero killing of dogs and cats has established a project team for amending the Animal Welfare Act. Since its launch on August 25, 2023, the PT has held 21 meetings to hear from stakeholders and deliberate on the direction of amendments. Out of these 21 sessions, however, only one touched on livestock animals, and just one on laboratory animals.
