Request for guidance to animal welfare administration regarding pig cruelty at slaughterhouses (2020-2021)

As mentioned in this article, to the slaughterhouse C and slaughterhouse F, which had been abusive to pigs from 2020 to 2021, we had requested the animal welfare department that has jurisdiction over each of the slaughterhouses to provide improvement guidance. We report on the results. Slaughterhouse C Not only this time, but also in 2016, abusive behaviors (heavy use of stun guns, kicking, riding pigs and kicking the face) were exposed at the slaughterhouse C, and at that time, we were requesting the meat hygiene inspection responsible for the slaughterhouse to make improvements. The Meat Inspection Center regards the abusive behavior at this time as a problem, and “if…

August 2020 – July 2021 Animal handing at Japan’s slaughterhouses: New investigation footage released

Animal Rights Center Japan has been working to improve the handling of cattle and pigs at slaughterhouses. 2016年に改善を要望していたD屠殺場は改善したのか?2020: “Welfare” not improving at slaughterhouses[Slaughterhouse in Japan] Tether too short to even lie down, tied overnight without even water夜中、屠殺場で豚に何が起きているのかと畜場へ、動物の扱いの改善要望Petition: End cruel treatment of animals at slaughterhousesNo action position of government: No water to quench animals’ thirst at slaughterhouses “Animal welfare at slaughterhouses” is so universal that the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health), of which Japan is a member, has established an animal welfare standard called “Slaughter of Animals”. It is an idea that has obtained international consensus*, having animal welfare requirements for slaughter set when exporting “beef” or “chicken”.*No animal welfare…

Avian flu 2020-2021: massacre, not euthanasia – evidence 2: “death by heat, by suffocation”
In Avian flu 2020-2021: massacre, not euthanasia - evidence 1: on-site inspection, we showed that the depopulation of poultry for avian flu is a massacre rather than euthanasia, but in this article we'd like to leave another piece of evidence for it being a massacre. On 2021/2/27, A report on the depopulation sites in violent avian flu outbreak events was posted, with a title "[National Defense Forefront] Unimaginable Avian Flu Depopulation: Self-Defense Forces struggle with protective clothing bright red with spouting blood; Japan is an underdeveloped country in animal welfare". In addition to showing that it was a harsh scene, like engaging in depopulation work while wearing diapers, this report…
2021 Awareness Survey regarding Livestock Animals

Since 2016, Animal Rights Center Japan has been conducting a survey once a year using a private company to see how well the actual rearing of livestock animals is recognized by consumers. We report the results of the survey conducted in 2021 (the number of valid replies was 1,207). The questions are the following 10 items: Do you know that many of the sows are trapped in a gestation crate, a narrow enclosure in which they can’t turn around? Do you know that many of the piglets are castrated and have their teeth and tails clipped without anesthesia? Do you know that many of the chickens for eggs are kept…

Avian flu 2020-2021: massacre, not euthanasia – evidence 1: “on-site inspection”

On 2020/11/5, avian flu broke out at a poultry farm in Kagawa Prefecture for the first time this winter. Since then, bird flu has spread to Fukuoka, Hyogo, Miyazaki, Nara, Hiroshima, Oita, Wakayama, Okayama, Shiga, Kochi, Tokushima, Chiba, Gifu, Kagoshima, Toyama, and Ibaraki, and the number of killing is currently (2021/3/10) 9,689,703 birds. The poultry killed are “egg-layer chickens”, “broiler chickens”, “breeder chickens (farms raising parents for eggs and meat chickens)”, and “ducks”. We doubt that anyone thinks this poultry depopulation for bird flu, requiring killing all poultry on the farm in a short time (as a guide, slaughter within 24 hours, carcass processing [buried and incinerated] within 72 hours)…

Endorsement Message from Meiji University Professor Emeritus Kunio Fukuda for “Don’t trap mother pigs!”

Don’t trap mother pigs! We for the campaign. “Don’t trap mother pigs!” campaign received a message of support from Professor Emeritus Kunio Fukuda of Meiji University. Pork is “produced” by an unimaginably cruel method = “sow stalls”. I strongly oppose the use of “sow stalls”. This is because, like humans, all living beings including pigs have emotions of happiness, anger, sorrow, and joy. Yoshida Kenko stated in “Tsurezuregusa” (128 steps) 700 years ago as follows.“Looking closely at all living things, birds, beasts, and even insects, their pure ways coming from their defense instincts, like caring for their children, longing for their parents, snuggling with their spouses, becoming jealous, upset, and…

Call on the hatchery industry to abolish chick crushing and suffocation

When it comes to slaughter of chicks immediately after birth, many people think of the slaughter of male egg-layers. However, not only chickens for eggs but also chickens for meat (broilers) are slaughtered immediately after birth. Even at the hatchery of broiler chickens, immature chicks, chicks with egg yolk stuck on their bodies, chicks with dirty belly buttons, and chicks with bad or inflamed legs are killed that day. Chicks are born at hatcheries every day; the number of chicks killed in Japan per day is estimated to be about 260,000 for egg-layer chickens and about 21,000 for broiler chickens*. As methods of killing these chicks, it is widely practiced…

Treatment of chickens in 2020 Birds are abandoned overnight at slaughterhouse

We’ve been following the issue of egg laying hens being abandoned for long hours at slaughterhouses since 2018.Unlike broiler chickens, egg laying hens have to wait overnight until they are killed at slaughterhouses. It’s a big animal welfare issue since chickens are not able to move their heads in a tiny cage for these hours. It was discussed in the diet and ultimately led to concerned ministries to release improvement notices. However, the Animal Rights Center confirmed the situations hadn’t improved so it was escalated in the diet again. As a result, the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare finally conducted an on-site inspection in August 2018. Their finding was released in November…

Small victims: quail eggs and their reality

Little quail eggs. Quails who lay these eggs are also very little. She was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand, and weighed only 100g when rescued. Rescued “waste quail”, Japan “Boiled quail eggs”, “flavored quail eggs”. Raw quail eggs are also sold at supermarkets. But how these quails are reared, probably not many people know. Actually the rearing method is the same battery cage as chickens, with wire mesh on all sides and wire mesh on the floor, which are tilted so that eggs can easily roll. There are no dustbathing or hiding areas. Rearing methods for both quails and chickens are equally inhumane. The photo…

Lina Mirai: “Just that one question, I’d like you to ask yourself once”

It was about three years ago when I was 17 years old that I learned about “gestation stalls”. Why isn’t such an important thing taught at school or discussed on TV? I was full of frustration and started researching like crazy. If the dog or cat living together at my home were in the same position as these pigs… what would I do…?? That’s it.  Just that one question, I’d like you to ask yourself once.

Red mites

Japanese eggs that got banned in Taiwan In 2018, due to oversupply of eggs, the price fell and the adult chicken renewal and empty shack extension project was launched, and millions of egg-laying chickens were slaughtered (details here). Egg prices are so low that they have fallen to the lowest level in the last 10 years, and production is said to be excessive *1. Wondering what happens to the extra eggs, the following article was published in the April issue of the Japan Chicken Industry News *2 with the title “Japanese eggs exceed Taiwan’s pesticide residue standard tolerance”. Chicken eggs exported from Japan in February were suspended from import because…
