Additive-free chiffon cake “Kimichiffon” is cage-free

In response to an inquiry from Animal Rights Center Japan, a chiffon cake shop, Kimichiffon in Shibetsu, Hokkaido, responded that all the eggs they use are already cage-free and that they would support the cage-free declaration.

This was originally a cage-free egg farm called Farm Armu, and they also run an additive-free chiffon cake shop using the eggs.

The owner says,

We don’t think it makes sense to keep chickens unless we keep them cage-free.  First of all, if you keep the chickens trapped, they cannot exercise and they have no physical strength, so you’d have to use drugs from when they are chicks.  Instead, they can walk around and fly, and in such an environment they can become healthy chickens.  I don’t think delicious eggs can be made without healthy chickens.  If you compare it with a human being, you’d be locked up in a small room and you would never have a good baby.

We use wheat and rice from Hokkaido for feed.  By exercising properly and eating decent food that is nutritionally balanced, chickens can be as healthy as humans.  For that reason, cage-free rearing is indispensable.  Like this, we want to do poultry that considers the chickens.

He talked about his passion for cage-free rearing compared to cage rearing.

What is cage rearing?

In cage rearing, which is the common rearing method for eggs in Japan, chickens are placed in cages and are overcrowded in order to prioritize productivity.

As a result, chickens are susceptible to illness due to lack of exercise, and drugs are used to prevent the spread of illness.

It’s misleading to say that that’s healthy, and it’s definitely not natural.

Cage rearing is being abolished all over the world, but Japan’s animal welfare is currently far behind.

A simple thing we can do to reduce the number of hens who continue getting exploited in their cages and go through life immobilized is for the consumers to stop buying cage-reared eggs and eliminate your egg consumption.

People who become aware of the actual situations and make humane and ethical choices today are what will lead to a sustainable future.
