RICCO gelato: the popular domestic sweets are fully cage-free!

RICCO gelato Co., Ltd., which operates stores on Okinawa Miyakojima and in Tokyo, is popular with a variety of flavors that ice cream lovers won’t get bored with.  Precise allergen labeling is also one of the attractions, and there are many types of ice cream that does not use milk or eggs.  There are also sales via an online store, so many people are probably using it; when inquired, we confirmed that cage-free eggs are used in all products in addition to ice cream.  RICCO gelato Co. Chief Director Yutaka Maeno said:

Even if it takes extra effort, we’d like consumers to eat safe and delicious food.

Rearing chickens cage-free may cost more than caged rearing, but Mr. Maeno thinks that time and effort should not be spared to make gentle food.  RICCO gelato carefully selects the “cool” producers who also consider the rearing method, procure raw materials and provide them to consumers.  By doing so, the idea is that a good image will be conveyed to consumers and the company will flourish.

“Treats” like ice cream are what makes our lives more enjoyable and happier by partaking them.  Unfortunately, however, sad sweets are prevalent, born out of production methods that put the chickens in dark and cramped cages to cut costs and force painful sacrifice.  If we learn that the eggs used in the sweets were laid by chickens who kept laying eggs in pain until death, can we really be happy eating such treats?  Even if the packages advertise the sweets as being good for the body and the environment, if they don’t use cage-free or free-range eggs, they use eggs that have been laid by suffering chickens.  If you were to eat treats that use eggs, please choose treats that use eggs from cage-free rearing that does not force suffering on the chickens.
